I moved to Madrid before I had ever visited Spain. That was a wild decision, I realized after I got here, whoops.
I knew just as much about Spain as Spain knew about me. Since my arrival in September 2012, I’ve been trying to process my experiences here, witness myself in a new cultural context and make some sort of cultural sense out of what I am witnessing. Most of the time I feel more confused than clear, and more lost than found. Yet, the journey continues moving forward, and one things for sure – I’ll never be the same again.
During a visit to Milan, I was fortunate to take a course with Dr. Milton Bennett of the Intercultural Development Research Institute. One of my fellow course companions was Patrick Schmidt, a longtime expat and also the Editor for the SIETAR Europa Journal. He asked me to contribute an article about Madrid. How could I? I’ve barely lived here 3 months, what do I know about Madrid? I sat down and starting writing, and this is the result. I hope you enjoy.
