The first 24 hours in Spain have been fairly uneventful, other than the fact that I just moved to Spain – ja! A few weird things have already happened though:
1) I didn’t go through customs… When we stopped in Frankfurt, I went through what looked like customs, but just had to scan my boarding pass, nobody ever checked my passport or even looked at me, it was like “self serve” check out line. When I arrived in Madrid, I just gathered my luggage and walked out to the taxi. I dont know how that happened, but I kind of wanted my passport stamped.
2) Airplane food gave me food poisoning. I flew Lufthansa and everything seemed nice, but lunch tasted a bit funny, so I stopped eating. During my layover in Frankfurt I did the joyous dash to the bathroom and lost my lunch. Back on the plane I went to sleep and woke up with another lunch. I gave it a few bites but my tummy was not so happy. Once again a mad dash to the bathroom while waiting for my luggage. Talk about arriving to Europe in STYLE! I felt very classy. Dinner was a bowl of rice. Talk about boring first meal in Spain.
3) In other news, apparently I look like I’m German. On the plane, the flight attendants would speak to me in German first, then realized I was English speaking. It didn’t stop there, I got to the apartment where I’m staying but couldn’t find the right number to buzz on the door. I stopped someone on the street and asked (in Spanish) to use their cell for un momentito, and they said ok, and then asked me (in German) if I am German. I said – no. Strange, I’m not that tall. I guess I’m blonde enough though.
Well, I’m all snuggled in for the night, but with all the napping I did, I’m not tired. But I am very hungry! I can’t wait until breakfast.
In general I’d say I feel good, a little worn out from the journey but in good spirits. It does feel a bit anticlimactic though! Plane travel makes it so surreal. It’s like – Ok, now I’m here, on the other side of the world. It is weird how normal it feels.
Many more interesting updates to come! Tomorrow is a wander the city day – just take in the city and maybe stop by to see a few apartments.
For now, I’m staying with a couple and renting a room by the night from Airbnb.com – here is my tiny little room and the street in Malasaña district.
